Fun in Florence

Today was our only full day in Florence.  We woke up around nine and were out by about 10:30. Everything in Florence is fairly close in comparison to the other cities we have traveled.  There were a lot of street vendors and markets that we explored.  The major sites that we hit were the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Flore, the Duomo and the Ponte Vechio.  Our plan was to come back to our hostel, rest a little and then go to the Accademia Gallery to see the statue of David, however, we all fell asleep and didn't make up.  So I was not able to see that, which is a little upsetting, but no big deal.  I have a lot of great pictures; Florence is a beautiful city right beside the mountains.  I finally got my internet working, but the connection still is not good enough to load pictures on the blog.  So, hopefully soon.  Our train leaves at 11:37AM tomorrow for Venice.  We had 4 days that we weren't sure what we were doing, but we have decided to just stay in Venice and treat those days as more of vacation days than tourist days.  The hostel in Venice is actually affiliated with the one that we are at right now in Florence, which is awesome because this hostel is so geared towards young travelers.  More about the hostels later.  Until Venice...

  1. Taking a vacation in Venice sounds like a good idea. You're probably all ready for a little rest. Hostels sound nice. The street vendors are probably interesting - don't have those around here. Looks like you're still enjoying nice weather - sundresses look great. More great pictures!! We really enjoyed our trip to Alfred. The Mass was beautiful - very personal and intimate. The reception was at a private room above the local coffee shop. Had an outdoor deck. It was a perfect setting for the reception. Many nice touches - digital pictures, wedding gowns... I'll share more details later when we IM. Really enjoyed having a chance to talk to Dan and Pat at the reception. Met many very nice people. Everyone was so friendly. We stayed at a hotel right by the University - the grounds are beautiful. Mrs. VH and I went to a country store owned by close friends and neighbors, Don and Sandy Cameron. It was really cute - had a lot of nice things. Spent a lot of time at Grandma's and Grandpa's. They were so hospitable and welcoming. We just really enjoyed spending time with the whole family, sharing in their special occasion, and seeing Alfred. Learned about the Finger Lakes from Aunt Janene - hope to explore them someday. Stopped in Ashtabula on the way home and saw Nick. He looks great and really seems to be enjoying himself. He'll be in Avon Lake on Tuesday. Will you be taking any boat rides in Venice? Be safe and continue to enjoy the adventure!! We miss you and love you, Mom
