The Dorms and Campus

Our entire GLC group (which consists of 28 students and 3 faculty) are dispersed between two dorms that are about 3 tram stops apart.  Not many people are very happy about this, because they think it is taking away from bonding within our group, which I agree with, however, the rooms are very nice.  Each of us has a roommate from the University of Leipzig, however, they are not any of the students that we are working with.  With our roommate, we each have individual rooms and we share a bathroom and kitchen.  The rooms are very spacious.  I would say that mine is as big as my room at home, maybe a little bit smaller (but with a lot less stuff of course).  I actually just met my roommate for the first time in three days about four hours ago.  She does not speak much English, but she is very nice.  Her name is Julia (pronounced Yulia).

Our dorms are about 20 minutes from campus, so we have to take the tram.  As it was explained to us, the university is not a campus university.  All of the buildings are spread throughout the city, which after being here for a few days, I have realized that I like a lot.  There is a classroom building, then a coffee shop, then a mall, a cafe, etc, all in a row.  It is a different atmosphere, but very interesting.  We took a tour of the city/university on Monday, and I learned a lot of history of the university.  This year in December is the 600th anniversary of the University. I will not bore you with any more of the history though.

Another thing that I have found very interesting about the city is the architecture.  Although it is still predominantly European, there are a few skyscrapers and there is a lot of construction going on.  All of the construction is for newer, more modern looking buildings.  It is very interesting to see the two styles mixed together.  Personally, I like the older style of course.

Today we went in the Library for the first time for a lecture.  It is the MOST BEAUTIFUL Library I have ever seen.  It is gigantic and the entire inside is marble.  I have a few pictures that I will probably post tomorrow because they are not on my computer yet, but the pictures do absolutely no justice to the building.  Well that is enough on this topic, next post will cover the project status.

Paz y Amor,
Laura
